I have heard much admiration of Dr. S. Lewis Johnson from speakers at Shepherd’s Conference, including John 
MacArthur, and Steve Lawson. So when I made the decision to listen to some sermons instead of listening to a book during my commute back and forth to work, I chose to check out some sermons by Dr. Johnson. I went to my primary resource of sermons (aside from my local pastors) at Monergism.com. There I found a series of sermons in the book of Isaiah. The series is an exposition of the whole book. I listened to the first one on Isaiah chapter one and then decided to download the whole series. After listening to the first sermon I found out that this series was done at Believer’s Chapel in Dallas, on a Monday evening in the fall of 1968. Lyndon Johnson was president of the United States. The audio was done as a special courtesy to those who wanted to follow along and not get left behind if they had to miss a sermon of two. There are 45 seperate audio files for this series. One for each sermon. So I now have an iPhone loaded with some great sermons to listen to for quite some time. For those who are not aquainted with this great preacher and teacher, I have provided some bio info below.
Dr. S. Lewis Johnson is considered by many to be one of the best expositors of the 20th Century. His impact continues today in the preaching ministries of many, including John MacArthur and Steve Lawson (just to name a couple). The depth of Johnson’s sermons and writings reflect his diligence in the study. Johnson was another preacher in the Reformed Dispensationalist camp (he was a Calvinist who maintained a distinction between the church and Israel and believed in a literal future kingdom where Christ will reign). ht – Shane Trammel

Thanks for the post. I have also enjoyed listening to S. Lewis Johnson: first I listened to his 37-part eschatology series, and now I’m listening to his Genesis series. How did you learn the date of the Isaiah series? I’ve downloaded the MP3s from both Believer’s Chapel and the SLJ Institute, but haven’t seen where any of the dates are given. I can sometimes figure out the approximate time (year) from something SLJ says, such as his age; the Genesis series must have been done in 1978, since he says his age is 63 during one of the messages.

Lynda O, thanks for the comment. To answer your question, he mentions the year in the 2nd message of the series I am listening to. He also mentions Lyndon Johnson in the present tense on a few occasions. I thought that was pretty cool. Thanks be to God for the many forms of media we have today. I would have loved to have heard all of Spurgeon’s sermons.
BTW – I briefly checked out your blog site. I like what I’ve seen so far. Keep up the great work.

I thought I had heard all of his messages available, several times, but I just recently found a series from the John Bunyan Conference. These were taken in the dawning of this great saint’s life and he explains why he left DTS due to his definite atonement convictions and could not sign their doctrinal statement. He also said that Dr. Walvoord didn’t want to lose him but due to the position that they had taken all the previous years they were compelled to let him go. I cannot get enough of this man’s compassion for the truth and the regeneration that it brings.

The comments above brought tears to my eyes. I am Dr. Johnson’s daughter, Grace. How wonderful to read that his ministry goes on long after he entered heaven’s gates and met his Savior face to face.

Thank you for the comment Grace. I so appreciate the ministry of your father. I totally identify with his doctrine and theology. I wish I could have seen him preach. Is there anyone in the family that the ministry torch passed too?

Grace, what a blessing a father like Dr Johnson must have been! I took a brief “Winterim” class from your father at the Master’s Seminary in California I think in the mid ’90’s. (It was on the use of the Old Testament in the New.) He was a wonderful teacher and a gracious man, but I didn’t really get a flavor for what he was like until recently when I started listening to his online messages. Besides being an exceptional Greek and Hebrew scholar and being a tenacious bulldog when it comes to searching out the truth of God’s Word, I think the characteristic about his preaching that was most delightful and encouraging was the fact that he didn’t shy away from sharing his own passionate love for God and His great mercy to us sinners. He was like a kid in a candy shop when he started to speak of our wonderful God, and I’m sure he communicated that to you as his daughter.

It’s not an extremely active discussion group, but fairly often several of us post quotes from SLJ and talk about him, learning more about him there. This group site also has a few documents including a list of his sermon series by date (years).

Dear Grace, Your father’s teaching ministry was made mention by Dr John MacArthur.. I am a follower of Dr MacArthur, so when he mentioned his admiration for Dr. Johnson, my ears perked up!. After discovering the website for the S. L Johnson Institute, I was so pleased to find so many teachings. The quality of Dr Johnson’s teachings and his commitment to ,and love for God’s word, can hardly be surpassed. What a joy to hear this mans sincere passion for the truth.
